What's a Metaphor For ?
A story about learning, genius, campfires and the power of storytelling.
I have had the privilege of working with some very intelligent people and some very wise people. But I've only worked with one genius - the late Robert Fletcher. Unless you've gone deep into the rabbit hole of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) you probably haven't heard of him, but if you've worked with him you would never forget him. I will probably mention him a lot in this blog as I learnt so much from him. This post focuses on the importance of story telling and how it helps us on our journey to rediscover our true selves.
Robert was there at the start of NLP in the 70s and learnt it from Richard Bandler and John Grinder. You could say that they developed it together, because in those early days they were all just winging it and developing processes based on the needs of the people they were working on.
But Robert wanted to go further and developed what I think of as the next iteration of NLP. He called it Thought Pattern Management (TPM). I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks with him, in Cardiff, in 2008, doing a TPM practitioner and master practitioner course. It was quite simply the best learning experience I've ever had and I still use the tools on a daily basis.
